Poll: Do Canadians support immigration?

Residents of Canada have spoken out about their attitudes towards the country's immigration policy.

A new Canadian study shows that most Canadians support the current level of immigration and believe that newcomers are important to the economy and play an important role in the country's population growth.

The telephone survey was conducted between September 7 and 23, 2021 and involved 2,000 Canadians. It found that Canadians' views on immigration have not changed much over the past 12 months, despite the pandemic.

The topic of immigration was temporarily sidelined during COVID-19, but is now beginning to resurface. Canada welcomed very few new residents in 2020, so it's going to compensate for that in the next three years by inviting more than a million applicants. Still, a majority of respondents (65%) don't think there are too many immigrants in Canada.

Compared to last year, Atlantic Canada (provinces of New Scotland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Manitoba and Saskatchewan saw a slight decrease in the percentage who support high levels of immigration, and a slight increase in Alberta.

Interestingly, among native Canadians, the percentage of people who think the country is calling too many immigrants is only 27 per cent, compared to 36 per cent of immigrants themselves.
