Residents of Israel are welcome in Canada! Free work and study permits
Canada has launched a new program that will suit many who have left Israel.
If you are an Israeli citizen, or if you simply lived in Israel and left after the Hamas attack, you can come to Canada and get an open work or study permit. And you will not even be charged a fee for processing the application. How do you get these permits and then stay in Canada as a permanent resident?
Canada has launched a new program to help residents of Israel who have left the war. You can get a study permit in Canada to enter an educational institution or an open work permit that allows you to be hired by any employer.
Who is eligible for the new progr?
The program is divided into two categories.
The first is Israeli citizens who are now in Canada with temporary resident status, such as a tourist, and believe that it is not safe for them to return to their home country. There are no other conditions. If you are an Israeli citizen and are now in Canada, you are automatically eligible to apply.
The second category is people who left Israel on or after October 7, 2023, and came to Canada. That is, they were or lived in Israel, left for Canada after the start of the conflict, and are now in Canada, again, in temporary resident status.
In the second category, you do not have to be an Israeli citizen, but you must have a close relative with Canadian citizen or permanent resident status. You must also have been in Israel and left after October 7. Close relatives are your spouses, common-law partners, parents, and grandparents. Unfortunately, other relatives are not eligible.
If you fit into one of these categories, you can apply for a work or study permit. The work permit will be valid for three years, and the study permit will be valid until the end of the study program you are enrolled in. On a separate note, the Canadian government has waived the application processing fees. It's CA$150 for a study permit application and CA$255 for an open work permit. The savings are small but nice.
How to apply?
The application is done online on Canada's official website canada.ca, you have to fill out forms, attach documents and you will also have to undergo a medical examination, security check, and have enough money to live in Canada. The deadline to apply is June 12, 2024.
Whether you choose a work permit or a study permit, you can either return to Israel or stay in Canada. There are more than 120 immigration programs in Canada, and many of them allow you to get a permanent residence permit if you have studied or worked in Canada for one year. So the sooner you get a permit, the sooner you can become a resident of Canada, and then citizenship is not far away.
