A new era for Canadian athletes
The government is increasing funding for the athlete support program.
In 2024, the Canadian government announced a significant increase in funding to support high-performance athletes. The Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, Carla Qualtrough, presented details of a new initiative aimed at enhancing support for athletes representing the country in international competitions.
Increased funding for the athlete assistance program
According to the 2024 Budget, $35 million will be invested in the Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) over five years, followed by $7 million in annual funding. This decision was made in response to the growing financial challenges athletes face due to inflation.
Monthly living and training allowances for athletes receiving AAP cards will increase by 23% from April 1, 2024. The senior card will now be worth $2,175 per month, while the development card will be $1,305.
Support for pregnant athletes and new disciplines
The government will also allocate additional funds to support pregnant athletes, providing them with financial assistance during and after pregnancy. Furthermore, new opportunities will be created for athletes in emerging sports.
Ten new senior card equivalents will be added to support athletes in new or developing Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.
Enhancement of key support programs
The living and training allowance for excellence and the dependent child allowance will increase by 23%, reaching $615 per month. The training and competition allowance for Paralympic athletes with high support needs will rise by 30%, amounting to $650 per month.
These measures are aimed at addressing issues related to the rising cost of living and are designed to provide Canadian athletes with the necessary support to achieve success on the international stage.
