Poll: Do Canadians support immigration?

Poll: Do Canadians support immigration?

Residents of Canada have spoken out about their attitudes towards the country's immigration policy.

A new Canadian study shows that most Canadians support the current level of immigration and believe that newcomers are important to the economy and play an important role in the country's population growth.

The telephone survey was conducted between September 7 and 23, 2021 and involved 2,000 Canadians. It found that Canadians' views on immigration have not changed much over the past 12 months, despite the pandemic.

The topic of immigration was temporarily sidelined during COVID-19, but is now beginning to resurface. Canada welcomed very few new residents in 2020, so it's going to compensate for that in the next three years by inviting more than a million applicants. Still, a majority of respondents (65%) don't think there are too many immigrants in Canada.

Compared to last year, Atlantic Canada (provinces of New Scotland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Manitoba and Saskatchewan saw a slight decrease in the percentage who support high levels of immigration, and a slight increase in Alberta.

Interestingly, among native Canadians, the percentage of people who think the country is calling too many immigrants is only 27 per cent, compared to 36 per cent of immigrants themselves.

More than half (57%) of respondents agreed that Canada needs more immigrants to increase its population, and an overwhelming majority (80%) said immigration has a positive impact on the economy, but last year the figure was 84%, an increase of 4 points.

Also, 76% of participants agreed that the government should pay more attention to immigration for entrepreneurs who want to open a business in Canada. Residents of the Atlantic provinces and Ontario especially supported this idea.

Overall, Canadians' openness to immigrants and refugees persists. Many continue to associate their country's uniqueness with values such as multiculturalism, inclusion and acceptance of newcomers, and virtually no Canadians see immigration as a problem.

Canada currently has more than 120 programs under which you can obtain permanent residency. An immigration consultant will select the optimal immigration strategy for you and will help you with the paperwork.
