Ontario favours immigrants

No more barriers for professional workers.

Ontario is one of Canada's most welcoming provinces. The Doug Ford government does its best to help those who have chosen Ontario as a new home. But according to local laws you need to have Canadian work experience to operate in certain fields.

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has eliminated the Canadian work experience requirement, as announced by Minister Monte McNaughton. This change helps qualified professionals enter their trained professions, addressing the issue of skilled newcomers in low-wage jobs.

Lack of work experience in Canada has been a key barrier to skilled immigrants performing their knowledge and skills in Canada.

“It’s an all-too-common experience: meeting a skilled newcomer trained as an engineer, doctor, or accountant, working in a low-wage job that has nothing to do with their profession. Our government has a plan to build a stronger Ontario that works for everyone, and we’re going to do it by unleashing the talent we have right here at home. I congratulate Professional Engineers Ontario for taking this historic step to support our mission,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

Today Ontario faces a shortage of a large number of workers, including specialists in the engineering sector. Roughly 300,000 jobs continue to go unfilled across the province every day.
