Tougher requirements for Canadian employers

The Canadian Department of Labour has amended the Ontario Immigration Act to make it harder for truckers to move to Canada. The amendment went into effect on February 1, 2022.

In Canada, the provincial authorities issue safety certificates to motor carriers, assessing them according to an accepted National Standard. Now truckers intending to come to Canada under the In-demand Professions program have to look for employers willing to provide with a job offer a valid commercial carrier certificate and their own CSR (Carrier Safety Rating) document. To be considered for the freight driver position, the carrier must have a safety rating of at least "satisfactory".

The CSR rating is assigned to any Canadian truck, with or without a trailer, weighing 4,500 kilograms or more, as well as commercial buses of 10 seats or more. The rating is calculated based on the carrier's accident history and fleet inspections.

According to the Ministry of Labour, this amendment will increase road safety and protect job seekers. In addition, firms closely tied to the Ontario economy will have an advantage over carriers from other provinces. A Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration system (CVOR) certificate is issued when you register, which is mandatory only for vehicles with Ontario licence plates.
