Ontario is grooming a rival for the current premier

The Liberal Party elects a provincial leader.

In the province of Ontario, the election for the leader of the local Liberal Party is coming to an end. Voting took place on November 25 and 26 after 8 months of campaigning.

On the last weekend in November, all certified party members in Ontario were able to vote for a new party leader. Approximately 100,000 people had pre-registered. Polling stations were located across the province, and there was no online voting this time.

Why it's important

Ontario is currently led by Progressive Conservative Party member Doug Ford. The Liberals are looking to appoint a strong leader who can defeat him in the next provincial election, which will be held in 2026.

Doug Ford himself feels confident and when asked by reporters if he is excited about the Liberal Party primaries, he jokes away.
