What makes an immigrant's life better?

What makes an immigrant

Canada asked immigrants and residents if they felt proud of the country's achievements.

Canada has much to be proud of — 13 different achievements were highlighted. But the pandemic has made its mark here as well, so the researchers selected only 3 of them related to the coronavirus crisis:

  • Canadian health care;
  • the democratic system in Canada;
  • attitudes towards all groups in society.

Statisticians have drawn an unexpected conclusion: immigrants are more proud of Canada's achievements than its native population.

Judge for yourself.

Proud: Immigrants, % Residents, %
the way Canada treats all groups in society 63 43
the country's successes in health care 79 72
the workings of the democratic system in Canada 81 62

However, not all immigrants are so enthusiastic. Researchers have noticed that the longer people live in Canada, the less proud they feel.

For example, 78% of those who had lived in the country for less than 5 years expressed their pride. Of those who have lived in Canada for 6 to 10 years, only 65% could say the same. And only 60% of those who immigrated more than 10 years ago said they felt proud. But even these numbers are higher than the survey data for native Canadians.
