More Alberta residents will receive large thank-you payments

The Government of Alberta is expanding the program to help workers in areas at high risk of COVID-19 infection.

Critical Worker Benefit is an initiative that is designed to recognize the hard work of critical workers during a pandemic.

In the first round of the program, the Alberta government paid $1,200 CAD to more than 277,800 health, social, education and private sector workers who provide critical services to Alberta residents or support the food and health supply chain.

Workers in new job categories will be eligible for the same payment. This includes social service and private sector workers who provided critical services to Alberta residents during the pandemic and faced an increased potential risk of COVID-19 infection in the workplace, such as taxi drivers and catering workers.

"The expansion of the Critical Worker Benefit program is a great opportunity to show appreciation for the critical work our taxi drivers and restaurant workers do every day. I am very grateful for the work they do and happy that we are expanding this program to thank more employees," said Muhammad Yassin, Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration.

To be eligible, employees must work a minimum of 300 hours between October 12, 2020 and January 31, 2021. Support staff working in licensed child care facilities must work a minimum of 243 hours during this period.
