A case of unusual influenza found in Manitoba

This is the third such case since April.

Manitoba Public Health Services reports that a single case of swine flu has been detected in the southern part of the province. After experiencing mild symptoms, the patient decided to test positive for COVID-19, the results were negative, but further investigation identified a rare case of swine flu.

The current assessment shows that there is currently no increased risk to people in Manitoba or other provinces. This virus is not food-borne and is not transmitted to people through pork or other foods, so there is no risk associated with eating pork. In most cases, such influenza viruses do not have the ability to transmit easily and persistently from person to person.

Public health officials, in conjunction with the Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development Division, have launched a public health investigation to determine the source of the virus and to make sure it has not spread.

The virus can be transmitted from pigs to humans and from humans to pigs only rarely. It is important for people in contact with pigs to take measures to reduce the spread of influenza viruses:

  • do not bring food, drink or other objects into the pig house and do not put anything in your mouth in areas where pigs are kept;
