Ontario schools will teach about mortgages and debt

The new curriculum covers areas that have been sorely lacking in school.

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce has announced changes to the mathematics curriculum for Grade 9 students that will take effect in the fall.

The new program will include financial literacy, coding, data handling, and more. Learning in these classes will be mandatory.

"We introduced a new math course that gives students important life and vocational skills," Lecce wrote on his Twitter.

In financial literacy classes, students learn how to deal with money in the future, what debt, savings, personal capital are, how to use a credit card, take out a mortgage or rent a house.

Lecce said that through such a system, students will be more relevant to today's job market, as well as gain new knowledge with an emphasis on practical skills.
