Alberta partially relaxes restrictions on vaccinated people

The coming May weekend could be the last long weekend that will have to be spent with strict quarantine measures.

Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, spoke about the new rules that will be in place for vaccinated residents in the province.

Currently in Alberta, 51% of the population over the age of 12 is vaccinated with at least one dose. Hinshaw noted that people who have been vaccinated even once have a reduced risk of contracting COVID-19. If infection does occur, a smaller amount of the virus enters the body, which not only ensures a milder course of the disease, but also greatly reduces the risk of transmission.

As of May 21, the province will have special rules for those who have been fully vaccinated and those who have been vaccinated once. Exceptions apply to those in contact with infected loved ones.

If a person who has been vaccinated twice comes into contact with someone who has been infected with COVID-19, he or she will not need to be quarantined for 14 days. But only if the person is asymptomatic and the second vaccination was given at least two weeks before the other person was confirmed to have COVID-19. If the contactee has symptoms, however, he or she will need to self-isolate and be tested. In case of a negative result, quarantine will be lifted and in case of a positive result it will be 10 days.

If, however, the person has been vaccinated once, the quarantine for the contacted person will be reduced from 14 days to 10 days — provided there are no symptoms. After 7 days of self-isolation, the contactee can take a COVID-19 test and in case of a negative result the self-isolation is cancelled.
