Canada is changing the allowable storage conditions for vaccines

Why is this important?

Health Canada has approved new storage conditions for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. Under the new rules, the drug can be kept in moderately cold temperatures: 2 to 8 °C — provided that it is used within 1 month.

The changes mean that Canada will now have more options for storing and distributing the Pfizer vaccine. Previously, the drug could only be stored at extreme temperatures of -60°C to -80°C, which made it difficult to transport and impossible to store indoors without special equipment. Thawed vials could only be stored for 5 days. On March 3, Health Canada allowed the vaccine to be stored for up to 14 days at -15 to -25 °C.

Then, on 10 May, the Ministry received a request from Pfizer-BioNTech to change the storage conditions. After careful examination of the vaccine, experts concluded that it remained stable at normal temperatures for 31 days.
