Manitoba has taken the lead in COVID-19 infections

The level of morbidity has been called "critical".

The province of Alberta, which imposed strict new limitations in early March for this reason, has recently set an anti-record for COVID-19 cases per capita in Canada. But on Sunday, May 16, Manitoba came out on top.

Manitoba now has a COVID incidence of 232 cases per 100,000 population, compared to 230 in Alberta. Other provinces are much better: for example, 115 cases in Ontario and only 60 in Quebec.

Infection levels in Manitoba are designated "critical," meaning the virus is spreading uncontrollably and putting a major strain on the health care system.

Despite the high rate of cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the daily infection rate is not as high as in other provinces. In the past week, there was an average of 465 infections per day. By comparison, the number was 2,352 per day in Ontario and 1,453 in Alberta.

On May 12, Manitoba opened enrollment to vaccinate residents 18 years and older, and on May 15, the government reported that 50% of adults in the province received at least one dose of the vaccine.
