Another province begins vaccinating pregnant women

Mothers-to-be have high risks of complications from COVID-19 infection.

The Ontario government has announced that pregnant women are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination.

The decision came days after Health Canada said it was reviewing vaccination procedures for pregnant women because of a dramatic increase in severe symptomatic cases in that population.

The Ontario government also noted that an extended interval of 16 weeks between two vaccine doses is appropriate for pregnant women.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has already called for pregnant women to be added to the list of people who can be vaccinated, and doctors across Canada continue to sound the alarm over pregnant patients filling intensive care units. According to medical professionals, they could be at risk of premature birth and even death.

Women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy are most likely to be admitted to the ICU. Pregnant women are thought to be three times more likely to be admitted to the ICU than non-pregnant women.
