Canadian province wants to introduce paid vacations for vaccinations

Employees will be able to legally vaccinate during their work hours.

The Alberta government is about to pass amendments to the Labour Standards Code that will allow working people to get paid time off with pay to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Alberta recently became one of the provinces where residents aged 40 and over can be vaccinated. Therefore, authorities say it's important that employees can take time off from work for as long as they need without fear of penalty or dismissal. Employees and employers are advised to plan vacations for vaccination together.

The duration of the leave will be 3 hours.

If the amendments are approved, they will take effect as early as the first reading of the bill. The leave would apply to all employees regardless of their status, type of employment and the amount of time they have worked for the company.

Alberta is not the first province to introduce leave of absence for the vaccination period. British Columbia did the same in early April, but with different conditions.
