Ontario police have given up new powers

Officers don't want to stop people on the streets because of the quarantine.

On April 16, the Ontario government announced new restrictions in the province. They include giving police the power to stop people and vehicles on the street to find out the purpose of leaving home and the address of residence. Fines of up to $750 CAD are to be imposed for refusal.

But on the same day, police officers announced they were refusing to stop people on the streets. Toronto police wrote on Twitter that they would focus on educating the public first. Peel Regional Police said they will not be stopping everyone. York Region police made the same statement, followed by several other regions in Ontario.

However, at entry points into the province, starting April 19, all vehicles will be checked without exception. Entry will be denied to those travelling without a valid reason.

Shortly after the police allegations, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones announced that police officers were no longer allowed to stop people unless they were suspected of organising a public event.

The new police powers have also been denounced by some politicians, such as Toronto Mayor John Tory.
