Is the third wave of COVID-19 already in Canada?

Doctors in Ontario are making alarming claims.

On Monday, March 15, the Ontario Hospital Association tweeted that a third wave of COVID-19 has already begun in the province.

According to the statement, new, more contagious strains of the virus are spreading in the province and the number of patients in intensive care units is increasing. Doctors say they need to start strictly enforcing safety measures immediately, otherwise hospitals could soon be overcrowded.

"The third wave has definitely already begun," Dr. Peter Yuni, research director and professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Toronto, said Monday.

Uni believes that it is not just a matter of complying with existing restrictive measures — more serious solutions are needed.

Ontario's chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, was also not reassuring to residents, saying the province is on the verge of its third wave, but added that the situation is still being assessed. Williams noted that Ontario is in a "race to the top" right now: on the one hand, vaccination of the population is taking place, and on the other hand, the rate at which variants of the virus are spreading is increasing.

Officials say the new strains now account for 49% of infections. They are more contagious and, according to some reports, are more likely to cause serious illness and death. The dominant variant now is British.
