Thousands of Canadians have fallen victim to fraud, losing millions of dollars

In 2020, defrauded Canadians lost a whopping $106 million Canadian dollars.

According to the latest figures, thousands of unsuspecting Canadians fell victim to fraud last month alone, resulting in a total loss of more than $10 million CAD.

A report from the Canada Revenue Agency says that there are many fraud cases occurring in the country every day, costing Canadians large sums of money. The agency reports that in January alone, 4,833 Canadians reported fraud. For all of last year, that number was 68,452.

And the real victims last month were more than 3,300 Canadians. In 2020, it was 40,612 people. At the same time, a whopping $106 million CAD or 6,218,066,000 rubles were stolen because of fraud!

The government says scammers often pretend to be representatives of the Canada Revenue Agency, the Ontario Service or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

"Many fraudsters attempt to mimic government services to gain access to your personal and financial information," the report says.

According to the Government of Canada, you can protect yourself by protecting your financial information and social security number. Be sure to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if you think you have been scammed.
