Social workers raise alarm over staffing shortages

The union claims that there is a severe shortage of social workers in British Columbia.

The union representing social workers in British Columbia (BCGEU) has reported a staffing crisis that is adversely affecting their work. A recent investigation uncovered a case of three children living in horrific conditions, which was not addressed in a timely manner due to the overwhelming workload of social workers.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development in British Columbia has announced an increase in staff and enhanced oversight. However, the union argues that staffing levels are not keeping pace with the growing population. In 2020, there were 1,581 people per social worker, whereas in 2024, that number rose to 1,883 people.

Relatives of the children affected by negligence believe the tragedy could have been prevented if calls for help hadn’t been ignored.
