Democracy Above All Else

Democracy Above All Else

The second "Summit for Democracy" in two years was held alongside with the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, the Netherlands and Zambia.

Two years have passed since the first Summit for Democracy, held in December 2021. It seemed then that the global world was full of contradictions and challenges, complex and flawed solutions. But just as then, today commitment to the values of democracy is unwavering.

Stable, strong democracies do not happen by accident. It is always the result of the efforts of all the public life heroes, from a schoolboy to a prime minister. And each of them, by action or inaction, by making choices every day, brings something special and individual to the universal process of building a democratic world.

Because democracy is first and foremost a process, not just a result. It is a progressive movement, requiring attention to all the details, not just to the majority defending its ideals. Not just to the majority, but to each individual.

Today's modern democracies face challenges that seemed impossible at the time of the first summit. And that is why the collective determination of the democratic world to unite and to defend shared values and build a better future is so utterly important.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced more than CAD 50 million for initiatives to promote and protect democracy at home and abroad. More than CAD 28 million come to support human rights , Indigenous peoples, religious minorities and 2SLGBTQI+ persons. After all, if one person is oppressed, everyone suffers.
