Why does cellphone service in Canada cost more than in other countries?

A study of cellphone bills in different countries determined that Canadians pay more than residents of other countries. What is the reason?

The government has been promising for years to revise the tariff plans of mobile operators and lower the cost. But Canadians constantly complain that the price is too high compared to the possibilities.

Many people attribute this to a lack of competition.

The independent company Rewheel publishes mobile prices in 50 countries. In 2022, Canada is at the top of the most expensive countries in terms of wireless rates.

Price per gigabyte in Canada:

  • 7 times higher than in Australia;
  • 25 times higher than in Ireland and France;
  • 1,000 times higher than in Finland.
The result is a pricing situation: a 5-minute scrolling Instagram feed costs 20 cents in Canada and 0.5 cents in France. Downloading the entire season of Wednesday on Netflix will cost $10.22 CAD for Canadians and $1.62 CAD for Australians; a 30-minute YouTube show will cost 0.8 cents in Ireland and $1.03 CAD in Canada. Prices are in Canadian dollars and are based on the December exchange rate.

But the Internet is not the only expensive service in Canada. Canada has always been at the top of the list as the most expensive operator in terms of prices for cell phone usage.
