Canadian Ukrainians opposed the return of the turbine for Nord Stream 1

They think it violates sanctions.

After Canada and Germany agreed to hand over the stalled Siemens turbine in Montreal, in the absence of which gas supplies to Europe were halved, the Ukrainian community in Canada protested and published a statement on the website of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC).

The statement reads that the community views the turbine issue as "another ploy" by Russia, and that the transfer of the equipment would compromise anti-Russian sanctions. The community believes that instead of returning the turbine, Ottawa should mediate and find a solution that does not contradict the restrictions.

UCC National President Alexandra Hychiy emotionally addressed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: "Any retreat from Canadian sanctions would look like a capitulation to Russian blackmail and energy terrorism."

Canada has one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas, which is actively pressuring Ottawa to impose increasingly strict sanctions against Russia after the conflict began in February 2022.

According to a UCC spokesman, the Canadian government did not respond to the letter.

Trudeau's office also had no comment.
