Contest for the Best Small Town in British Columbia

Contest for the Best Small Town in British Columbia

CBC News is voting from March 15 to April 25, 2022.

The cities of British Columbia were divided into districts and paired. By April 15, 8 cities from different parts of the province that received the most votes were already known.

In northern British Columbia, two cities reached the final: Smithers (55.7%) and Bella Coola (44.3%). The city that is larger won. Smithers has 5,378 people, rail service, mountains for skiing and mountain biking, a brewery and a pub. There are 2,107 people living in and around Bella Coole, including about 43% Nooksack Indians and 10% descendants of immigrant Norwegians. You can get there not only by car, but also by plane and ferry.

Interesting fact: In The Incredible Hulk, the main character Bruce Banner ran away from people and tried to control his transformation into the Hulk near Bella Coola.

Kimberley (54.7%) and Osoyoos (45.3%) were the finalists in the competition for the best city in British Columbia's Inner Plateau region. Both cities are considered resorts and receive subsidies from the provincial government.

There are 8,115 people living in Kimberley. The city was named after the South African Kimberley mine, which until 2001 was home to the world's largest lead-zinc mine. Now Kimberley has Canada's largest nature park, a ski resort, and a preserved underground railroad in the mountains for tourists.
