New jobs in Saskatchewan

Statistics Canada estimates that in January 2022 there were 24,600 jobs in Saskatchewan.

The economy of Saskatchewan, one of the first Canadian provinces to begin lifting epidemiological restrictions, is in need of labour. The province's unemployment rate has fallen to 5.5% from 7.2% in early 2021 and is now below the national average of 6.5%. The province's need for workers has increased by 4.6% since January 2021 and will continue to grow.

An example of Saskatchewan's sustainable economy is a recent investment by Federated Co-operatives Ltd. This company is a multi-co-operative, producing, redistributing and selling petroleum products, food products and animal feed across Canada.

Federated Co-operatives Ltd. plans to invest $2 billion CAD in Saskatchewan and build a canola processing and biodiesel plant next to the co-op refinery. At least 2,500 people will be needed to build the plant, and the plant itself will employ at least 150 people full-time when it begins production in 2027. Someone will also have to work in the fields where the canola will grow, so the number of jobs will increase.

Canola is a modified version of rapeseed, the plant from which oil is made. Canadian canola differs from rapeseed in that it has no unpleasant taste. By the end of the twentieth century, rapeseed and canola were used to make biodiesel. It is stored for a short time, begins to decompose after three months and is therefore considered absolutely safe for the environment. In addition, the combustion of biodiesel has almost no carbon dioxide emissions.

The plant is still only in the plans, but Saskatchewan needs people ready to work right now. Check out the list of occupations for which the province invited immigrants through the International Skilled Worker — Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot stream in December 2021.
