Killing heat - 60 temperature records this past weekend!

The temperature records recorded in Western Canada last Saturday and Sunday are already being called nothing short of "very dangerous and historic."

Environment Canada is warning that the intense heat wave that gripped much of Western Canada last weekend will not disappear in the coming days of the work week. This weather forecast is valid from Monday morning through Wednesday evening: daytime highs are expected to be in the range of +35-40 °C and nighttime lows to +16 °C.

However, forecasters predict that abnormally hot weather will set in not only British Columbia, but also Alberta, much of Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and parts of the Yukon. A slight welcomed cooling may come only to parts of British Columbia and the Yukon.

Temperature records

As many as 60 temperature records were recorded in British Columbia last Sunday. The hottest was in the small village of Litton, where the mercury hit 46.6°C, beating the 1937 Canadian high of 45°C in Saskatchewan.

What is expected due to the heat wave?

1. Meteorologists are very concerned that the high humidity in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia could cause temperatures to reach as much as 50° C. Local raspberry farmers seriously fear that such heat will completely burn their raspberry bushes and the berry harvest season will be over before it even begins.

2 More than a dozen school districts across the province are canceling classes Monday.
