Tourism sector demands Canadian authorities' plan to open borders

Tourism sector demands Canadian authorities

Sphere leaders believe the government should publish a plan to lift restrictions and new rules on entry into the country.

During the Canadian Travel and Tourism Roundtable, there were calls for the immediate release of a national plan to restore the economy, reopen the border to the United States and provide clear information on how travellers arriving from abroad should confirm their vaccinations. These are critical factors that should help rebuild Canada's tourism sector and economy as a whole.

The Tourism Roundtable is a gathering of tourism sector leaders: representatives from airports, airlines, hotels and chambers of commerce across the country. Canada's tourism sector is valued at more than $100 billion CAD, accounting for 2.1% of the country's GDP and employing millions of residents.

Although the federal government has already received recommendations from the COVID-19 Expert Advisory Panel, the plan to resume international and domestic travel as well as entry procedures for vaccinated aliens has yet to be published.

At the G7 summit, held over the weekend of June 12 and 13, leaders from leading countries recognized that it is important for the global economy to safely resume international travel, and this requires approval of a number of standards, including digital applications, testing requirements, proof of vaccination and the like. Canada is the only country in the G7 that does not yet have a formal plan to open its borders.

Travel industry representatives are also asking the federal government to announce clear rules of entry for Canadians and foreign nationals that will take into account how vaccinations are confirmed, international and domestic travel procedures, travel for unvaccinated children and other important details.
