A region of Canada has completely eliminated COVID-19

The rate of active cases has reached zero.

One district in Ontario has distinguished itself by having zero active COVID-19 cases. The district of Timiskaming, about 600 km north of Toronto, was the first in the province to cope with the spread of the virus. Several other smaller districts have come close, but have not yet reached zero.

COVID-19 is still most prevalent in the Greater Toronto Area. As of Saturday, June 5, there were 2,514 active cases there. In second place is the Peel region with 1,903 active cases.

Even though Timiskaming is disease-free, residents have to comply with the same restrictions that apply to the rest of the province. Ontario has a plan to lift restrictions that will open up the province in three phases depending on the number of people who are vaccinated.
