Canada's border opening will not depend on other countries

What will Canada be guided by when it comes to lifting travel restrictions?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country will not rush to open the borders. This was in response to calls for a plan to reopen travel between Canada and the United States.

The premier said the COVID-19 situation is improving in both countries, but the government's priority is the safety of Canadians.

"We're on the right track," Trudeau said. — But we will make decisions based on the interests of Canadians, not on what other countries want."

He also stressed that while everyone wants to travel, see friends and go on holiday again, no one wants another surge of disease and another pandemic wave that will force the country back to severe restrictions.

Trudeau previously said travel restrictions could be lifted when 75% of Canada's population is vaccinated.

Currently, the closed borders regime extended until June 21.
