Ontario requires some employees to be vaccinated

Who will have to be inoculated to continue working?

The province of Ontario has decided to take additional measures to protect nursing home residents from COVID-19 by requiring employees to be vaccinated.

"Vaccination in nursing homes is the best way to protect residents, staff and their families," said Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, provincial minister for long-term care.

The new rules require staff in all nursing homes in the province to provide one of the documents:

  • confirmation of vaccination with two doses;
  • confirmation of medical contraindications to vaccination;
  • Evidence of participation in an educational program about the benefits of vaccination and the risks of not getting vaccinated.

New measures in institutions must be implemented by 1 July 2021. Management is required to monitor compliance and report on immunization rates among staff.

According to the Ontario government, vaccination in nursing homes will ease current restrictions related to COVID-19, which will improve residents' quality of life.

Previously vaccinated nursing home residents in Ontario allowed close contact with vaccinated staff, and relatives were allowed to visit the elderly outdoors.
