Third wave of COVID attacks young people

Not only have young people become more infected with the virus, but they also end up in hospital more often.

Dr. Teresa Tam, Chief Medical Officer of Health Canada, made a statement that COVID-19 activity in the country is on the rise. And this time, the highest number of infections is among people between the ages of 20 and 39. There has also been an increase in the number of people under the age of 60 in intensive care units.

Tam reminds us that serious disease development can occur at any age, and she cited mass events as one of the main "spreaders" of the virus.

As of 20 April 2021, when the statement was issued, Canada had more than 1.3 million cases of infection, 88 000 of which were active. More than 23,500 deaths have been reported since the pandemic began. Last week, April 13-19, 8,680 new cases were identified, a 7% increase from the week before.

The British strain, B.1.1.7, is now the dominant new COVID-19 strain in Canada and may have displaced the original virus variant which started the pandemic in some regions. There is also concern about the spread of the Brazilian strain, P.1, against which preliminary evidence suggests that vaccines are less effective.

Tam said she hopes that with an increased supply of vaccines, Canadians will soon develop immunity to COVID-19, but noted that at the moment, most people in the country are still susceptible to the virus.
