Canada expects resumption of shipments from Pfizer this week

Canada's sluggish vaccination efforts are finally getting a big boost from the increased supply of vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech after a month-long lull.

Public Health Canada has said it expects to deliver more than 335,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, although the company itself says the figure will be closer to 400,000.

That's because the amount cited by the health agency is based on five injections per vial, although the federal government recently agreed to Pfizer's request to extract six doses from each vial.

In any case, the expected shipment will be the largest since the pandemic began, as Pfizer continues to ramp up production after a month-long decline by expanding its plant in Belgium.

Canada's vaccination efforts have slowed to a trickle during this time, with only 339,000 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine delivered between January 18 and last week, rather than the promised 1.15 million.

Pfizer is expected to deliver an even larger shipment next week. The company also said it will deliver on its promise to deliver a total of 4 million doses by the end of March.
