Curfew in Quebec won't ease due to Canadians' fault

Curfew in Quebec won

Even after an overzealous requirement caused a man to freeze to death in the street, Quebec's premier isn't going to ease the quarantine.

Earlier we reported that in Montreal a homeless man froze to death. The main reason for the tragic accident was a curfew imposed in Quebec to combat a major outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19. Under the new law, shelters where homeless people used to spend their cold nights are forced to close at 9:30 p.m.

What has happened has triggered a wave of justifiable outrage and a flurry of calls to government agencies demanding that the demands be reduced in severity. However, the Prime Minister of Quebec, Mr François Legault, refused to heed these demands, notwithstanding the fact that even the current mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, had joined them.

According to the prime minister, reducing strict restrictions on quarantine time could lead to violators of the curfew simply pretending to be homeless, posing a threat to those around them.

The homeless themselves, who shared the Open Door shelter with the victim for a long time, say that the curfew has created unbearable conditions for them:

"When the shelter closes at night, we are forced out into the cold streets where we are forced to sleep," said Annisi Papialuk, a regular visitor to the shelter.

For her, staying outside at night is already a severe stressor without the cold, and now, after Rafael Andre's death, that anxiety has been even greater.
