An iconic music event returns to Montreal

More than 350 concerts are scheduled on the streets of the city from June 30 to July 9.

The 42nd Montreal Jazz Festival opens its doors after a pandemic.

The city center is partially closed to traffic for 10 days, as the event is not tied to one location, and listeners can visit several concerts in one night and enjoy a variety of directions of the jazz scene.

"There's a very warm atmosphere, and people come here to socialize with each other and discover music. There's something special about the energy of the city during this festival," says Dominique Fils-Elme, an artist from Montreal.

Two-thirds of the performances are free to attend, with admission to the indoor venues costing no more than $70 CAD for the chance to hear famous musicians like Colin James or Holly Cole.

This year, Heritage Canada has allocated $800,000 CAD for the event so that residents and tourists can listen to music for free and enjoy the outdoor festival atmosphere.

Government support for the event was announced by Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage: "What a joy to see the Montreal International Jazz Festival return to its peak! Jazz fans and tourists alike will delight their eyes and ears with a rich and varied program. There is no doubt that the festival will bring the metropolis to life."

Montreal Jazz Fest is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2004 as the largest jazz festival in the world. Every year it uncovers new stars who represent contemporary jazz trends, both in the classic styles of jazz, swing and blues, and in their blending with other genres of music, such as hip-hop and rock.
