Canadian province tests digital ID card

Accessing online and in-person services will now be easier, safer and more reliable than ever before.

The province's Ontario digital identity program is a convenient new way to prove your identity, replacing physical ID cards. The introduction of the digital ID card was first announced in October 2020 as part of Ontario Onwards: An Action Plan for a People-Centered Government. However, the plan has since been pushed back to 2022.

What is it?

Digital ID is a convenient and simple identification solution designed to meet the security and encryption requirements for secure transactions and access to online services. The Ontario Digital Identity Card will allow you to prove your identity without providing any physical documents. COVID-19 has made it clear that online transactions can be more user-friendly than paying for goods and services in person. The introduction of Digital ID in Ontario means that more businesses that require customer identification will be able to move their services online.

Pros of the digital ID card:

  • It can always be easily accessed using your mobile device;
  • your data is protected by strong encryption, and unlike your physical wallet, the digital identifier can easily be disabled if your phone is lost or stolen;
  • You will always be assured of privacy when using it. For example, if you need to show that you are of legal age, the verifier will only know that you are over 18, not your date of birth or actual age;
  • just like a driver's license, a digital ID card is government-certified proof that you are who you say you are;
  • No one can access your data without your consent;
  • The digital ID card will be issued on a voluntary basis. You will still be able to use your physical ID card.

It should also be noted that the digital ID is only stored on your personal mobile or computer device and can be disabled remotely. This feature can protect you from identity theft if your personal mobile or computer device is lost or stolen. The government will not know where you have been or where you have used your digital ID. Finally, it cannot be used without your permission because you will always have to give consent before sharing any information.
