AirCanada is being sued over the biggest heist in the country

The U.S. company is outraged at the lack of progress in the investigation.

Canada's largest airline, AirCanada, is being sued over the theft of valuable cargo. The plaintiff is Brink's International, an American company that specializes in the safe transportation and handling of valuable goods. The incident, which resulted in the theft of cargo totaling CA$ 20 million, occurred back in April — but the investigation has not moved forward since then.

On April 14, it was reported that a flight from Zurich landed at Toronto airport with more than CA$ 20 million worth of goods sent to Canada. Forty-two minutes after unloading, they were stolen. Among those items were gold bars weighing 400 and 19 kilograms and $2 million in cash. This is currently one of the largest heists in Canadian history.

The claim against the carrier is negligence and failure to secure the cargo at all stages. The indictment alleges that an unidentified person gained access to the warehouse where the valuables were stored around 6:30 p.m. local time. Apparently, this person entered by simply showing a bill for a shipment he had nothing to do with. Brink's International is holding the air carrier responsible:

"No security protocols or features were in place to monitor, restrict or otherwise regulate the unidentified individual's access to the facilities," a spokesperson said.

The plaintiff expects AirCanada to fully compensate for the damage caused. The airline's press service has not yet commented on the situation.

The other biggest heist in the country's history is still considered a much more Canadian case — Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist in 2011 and 2012. Back then, 3 tons of syrup worth $18.7 million were stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.
