Can I get rejected when applying for permanent residency in Canada? Yes, less than 30% of people were approved for one of the immigration programs. I came across some very interesting official statistics on permanent residency denials. In 2021, 503,396 immigration applications were processed, but only 461,751 were approved. That is, 9% of applicants were denied.

The number of rejections is small, but if you analyze specific programs, some of them have a much higher percentage. I will take apart the unsuccessful programs. I will analyze those where there were at least 500 applications, and I will not consider refugees.

Atlantic Immigration Program

Temporary program for foreign workers

In fifth place is the temporary immigration program, under which temporary Canadian residents can change their status to permanent. Usually, it was used by people who worked in Canada or graduated from a Canadian institution. 86% of the applications were approved, and the number of permanent residencies issued is decent.

Start-up Visa

On the fourth spot with rejections is the Start-up Visa program. On the one hand, less than 85% of applications were approved, but if you look at the history of previous years, it used to be significantly worse. So from the minuses, I would turn this program more into a plus. With a good immigration consultant, you are likely to be accepted. There are three major losers left.

Caregivers programs

In third place is a program for nannies and caregivers. This is an old program, now it has been replaced by new ones. You had to work in Canada and then apply for permanent residency. Only 74% of applicants were approved. Not sure why.

Humanitarian Immigration Program

In second place is the Humanitarian Immigration Program. This is not exactly the same as the refugee program. You must prove that you need to live in Canada and that you have no ties to your home country. Alas, these are complicated and expensive cases, and only 55% of applicants are approved.

Self-employed Persons Program

The first place risky immigration programs to Canada upset me the most. It may well be our fault because we often talk about the Self-employed Persons Program. Unfortunately, not everyone can immigrate through it, and you have to prepare a large package of documents. If you do everything yourself without hiring an immigration consultant, there is a high chance of making a mistake. That is why you can fall into the 70% who were rejected.
