Immigration to Alberta through the Alberta Express Entry Stream
The Alberta Express Entry Stream is one of the pathways under Alberta's provincial program, designed to help skilled professionals and Canadian graduates immigrate to Canada.
The Alberta Express Entry Stream allows the province of Alberta to select and invite candidates from the Express Entry system who meet the program requirements.
Eligibility requirements
Alberta provincial program representatives select immigration candidates through this stream based on information in their federal Express Entry profiles and send them notifications of interest.
Candidates who meet the following criteria may receive an invitation to apply for the Alberta Express Entry Stream:
- have a valid Express Entry profile;
- meet the minimum criteria for one of the federal programs:
- have expressed interest in immigrating to Alberta;
- have scored a minimum of 300 points (out of 1,200) in the Express Entry system;
- fall under one of the categories listed below.
Categories
There are several categories of candidates who can expect an invitation from Alberta. In addition to the requirements listed above, you must fall under one of these categories:
- Family connection and primary occupation in demand. Alberta may notify of interest if the primary applicant has a close relative (parent, child, sibling) over 18 living in the province with citizen or permanent resident status. The applicant should also have an occupation in demand in Alberta.
- The Dedicated Health Care Pathway. This category is for candidates in the healthcare profession who have received a job offer in Alberta. Applications through this stream are possible not only via the Express Entry system.
- The Accelerated Tech Pathway. This category is for candidates with tech occupations who have found employment in Alberta.
- The Law Enforcement Pathway. Candidates may be invited under this category if they have a job offer from a member of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police in one of the eligible law enforcement professions.
- Priority sectors. These include agriculture, construction, tourism and hospitality. A job offer in this category is not mandatory, but priority is given to candidates who have one.
Chances of selection
Some factors increase the chances of receiving an invitation from Alberta regardless of which category the candidate falls under. Your chances will be higher if:
- you have an Alberta job offer;
- you are a graduate of a Canadian post-secondary institution;
- you have a parent, child, or sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Alberta;
- French is your first language;
- your Express Entry profile is valid for more than 5 months.
How to apply
You cannot apply directly to the Alberta Express Entry Stream. When the province is interested in a candidate in the Express Entry pool, it sends them a notification of interest and an invitation to apply for immigration with the appropriate link.
After application, you will be awarded points according to the points grid. The most successful candidates will be invited for immigration.
