Immigration to Alberta for healthcare professionals
Healthcare professionals in certain occupations may be eligible to apply through the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway.
The Dedicated Healthcare Pathway of Alberta's provincial program allows candidates who have found work in healthcare to obtain permanent residency. Applications for this stream can be submitted using one of two options — Express Entry (application with registration in the Express Entry system) or Non-Express Entry (application without Express Entry registration).
General requirements
Regardless of the option, candidates must meet several requirements to be eligible for immigration through the healthcare professionals stream:
- receive a job offer in Alberta in one of the eligible occupations;
- meet the licensing requirements for the profession.
Within this stream, Alberta sends invitations to candidates with the following occupations:
- specialist physicians;
- registered nurses;
- licensed practical nurses;
- nurse practitioners;
- physician assistants;
- occupational therapists;
- physiotherapists;
- clinical social workers;
- psychologists.
Profiles of candidates with other healthcare occupations may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Express Entry option
To apply through Express Entry, you must meet the general requirements as well as the requirements of the Alberta Express Entry stream, namely:
- have an active profile in the Express Entry system;
- meet the minimum criteria for one of the three federal programs:
- indicate a primary occupation from the list of eligible occupations in your Express Entry profile;
- score a minimum of 300 points in the Express Entry system.
Non-Express Entry option
This option is only available to those who have received a job offer in Alberta for a medical profession but do not meet the Express Entry option requirements. If you can register in Express Entry and score 300 points there, you must use the Express Entry option.
To apply through Non-Express Entry, in addition to the general requirements, you must demonstrate English or French language proficiency at a minimum of 5 points on the CLB scale (intermediate level) or sufficient skills to obtain a license.
How to apply
The immigration process through the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway depends on the chosen option. For the Express Entry option, the process will be the same as in the Alberta Express Entry stream: you cannot apply for immigration independently; Alberta representatives select suitable candidates from the Express Entry pool and send them invitations to apply with instructions.
For the Non-Express Entry option, applications should be submitted on the official Alberta website.
After application, you will be awarded points according to the points grid. The most successful candidates will be invited for immigration.
