Canada records: 35,000 new immigrants in one month
Will the country be able to meet the 2021 plan?
Last month was a record month for Canada in the number of immigrants admitted during the pandemic. According to preliminary estimates by the Department of Immigration, the country welcomed more than 35,000 people.
"We are going to meet our plan to accept 401,000 new permanent residents," Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino commented.
For 2021-2023, Canada has set its most ambitious goal ever: to admit at least 401,000 newcomers annually. A total of 144,330 immigration candidates were invited between January and June 2021. More than 250,000 more people remain to be admitted, which is about 43,000 a month.
It will be difficult, but some factors may help Canada reach the goal:
- new time streams for which 90,000 PRs are planned;
- open borders for those who have already received proof of permanent resident status, as well as for other categories of travelers;
- record selections in Express Entry;
- increased quota to accept family sponsorship program applications.
In June, the largest selections were for the federal program for professionals with Canadian experience as well as the provincial immigration programs British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.
If the Canadian government is serious about executing its ambitious plan, we should probably expect major selections and possibly new immigration programs in the coming months.
