Immigration to Alberta through the Alberta Opportunity Stream
If you are currently in Alberta with a work permit, you can apply for permanent residency under the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream allows candidates with temporary resident status and a Canadian work permit to obtain permanent residency.
Eligibility
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- have a job offer and work in Alberta at the time of application;
- have at least a high school education;
- have 1 year of work experience within the last 18 months in Alberta or 2 years within the last 30 months outside Alberta (in Canada or abroad);
- demonstrate English or French language skills at the level:
- CLB 5 for TEER 0, 1, 2, and 3 occupations in the NOC classification;
- CLB 4 for TEER 4 and 5 occupations in the NOC classification;
- CLB 7 for nurse aides and orderlies.
Canadian university and college graduates who hold a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) must have at least 6 months of work experience in Alberta in the last 18 months, and the current place of work must be consistent with their education.
Ineligible occupations
The Alberta Opportunity Stream is open to almost all professions, with some exceptions:
- legislators;
- school principals and administrators of elementary and secondary education;
- managers in social, community, and correctional services;
- fire chiefs and senior firefighting officers;
- escort agency managers, massage parlour managers;
- judges;
- secondary school teachers:
- elementary school and kindergarten teachers;
- authors and writers;
- musicians and singers;
- justices of the peace;
- early childhood educators who do not have certification in Alberta;
- elementary and secondary school teacher assistants;
- instructors;
- actors, comedians, and circus performers;
- painters, sculptors, and other visual artists;
- artisans and craftspersons;
- athletes;
- real estate agents and salespersons;
- dental laboratory assistants/bench workers;
- home child care providers;
- home support workers, caregivers, and related occupations;
- casino occupations;
- performers;
- sales-related occupations;
- operators and attendants in amusement, recreation, and sport;
- support occupations in personal services;
- service support occupations;
- taxi and limousine drivers and chauffeurs;
- harvesting labourers;
- aquaculture and marine harvest labourers;
- trappers and hunters;
- mine labourers;
- landscaping and grounds maintenance labourers.
How to apply
If you meet the requirements of the Alberta Opportunity Stream, you can apply on the provincial website. You will be assessed on factors such as age, education, language skills, work experience, a job offer in Alberta, and more. The most successful applicants will be invited to permanent residency.
