Scandalous initiatives, the Canadian passport redesign – what else happened during the week of May 8-14?

Canada's ruling party voted to increase control of the media. The authorities want the media to publish only material whose sources can be traced. This comes after the passage of a scandalous law that forces social networks and streaming services to promote Canadian content. And such attempts at censorship are already worrying the Canadian population.

There are some positive initiatives as well. Canada is committed to eliminating carbon-emitting transportation by 2035 and is ready to help residents buy electric cars. You can get up to CAD 5,000 from the government to buy or lease an electric car.

The Bank of Canada announced plans to issue a digital Canadian dollar. The banking system has taken a closer look at the technology used in cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency in owners' wallets is secure, and it can be transferred to another wallet quickly and with minimal fees. The Bank of Canada wants to do the same with the digital dollar, only its rate will not constantly fluctuate but will be tied to the real Canadian dollar.

Canada has released new maple leaf commemorative coins. The series includes three silver coins in denominations of CAD 20, 50, and 200.

Getting into a Canadian college

Education in Canada for foreigners doesn't have to be expensive at all. ILAC International College offers tuition three times cheaper than the average cost of studying in Canada for foreigners. For as little as CAD 5,000, you can take the Service Excellence for Business program with a paid internship. Hurry, you have until June 30 to apply!

Another of our partners is Fanshawe College, located in the heart of Toronto. The college offers programs in healthcare and tourism, some with paid internships. Graduates receive a Canadian work permit upon graduation, and Fanshawe gives 12 free weeks of online English on admission.

Immigration and citizenship

Canada extended the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot until 2025. The program is for agricultural workers who are employed in Canada.

From June 17 to 20, Canada will hold conferences for those who want to immigrate. The events will be held in three cities in France, and will also be broadcast online. Organizers will talk about ways to immigrate to Canada, the job market, job search tools, the right CV format, and study programs.

Canada is one of the very attractive countries to move to. But statistics show that the number of immigrants gaining citizenship is decreasing. Whereas in 2001 about 75% of permanent resident holders became citizens, according to the 2021 census, about 46% of immigrants get passports.

Speaking of passports. Canada updates its passport design every ten years. The last time this happened was in 2013. Now the authorities have unveiled a new design, which, expectedly, has drawn both support and a barrage of criticism.

Canadian rankings

Have you ever wondered which brands in Canada are trustworthy and which are not? In a recent survey, Canadians were asked to name the most trustworthy firms. This information is definitely useful for those who are thinking about moving.

Another useful selection is startups to look at. If you want to immigrate through business, studying local startups helps you understand market trends and consumer demands.

Many people tend to think that Canada used to be better, but now the country is no longer the same. We analyzed what has changed in Canada over the past 20 years, and whether the country is really changing for the worse.

Immigration draws

The province of Ontario held several immigration selections at once. On May 8, the region invited 2,349 people from the Human Capital Priority stream. They had healthcare occupations. And on May 9, there were selections for 400 foreign workers and 584 international graduates. Both categories of candidates found jobs in Ontario in healthcare or technology.

On May 9, there was one more draw in British Columbia. The province issued 155 invitations to candidates with in-demand professions: technicians, educators, health professionals, and veterinarians. Another 15 on the same day were selected among entrepreneurs, some in the general draw, and some among those who do business in small and rural towns of British Columbia.

On May 10, the long-awaited Express Entry selection for provincial program candidates took place. Invitations were extended to 589 people with a passing score of 691. Since a provincial nomination automatically yields 600 points, only 91 points were sufficient for the other factors.

On May 12, Ontario held a round of invitations again, but this time for entrepreneurs. 14 people were the lucky ones.
