Canada extended immigration pilot for farm workers
And made the requirements for candidates easier!
On May 8, Canadian Minister of Immigration Sean Fraser announced a two-year extension of the immigration pilot program for agri-food workers. The pilot was supposed to end this year, but will now run through May 14, 2025.
"Our farmers and food processors depend on the steady arrival of foreign workers so that planting, harvesting and food processing activities can take place throughout the year," Fraser commented.
The Agri-Food Pilot allows applicants who have found employment in Canada in the agricultural sector and have worked for one year to get permanent residency. Each year, 2,750 applicants are granted residency.
The minister also announced some simplifications to the pilot:
- annual limits on the number of candidates applying for specific professions are abolished;
- family members of agri-food workers, regardless of their occupation, will be able to obtain an open permit to work in Canada;
- unions will be able to certify a candidate's work experience instead of a letter from the employer;
- some workers will be able to get permanent residency by proving work experience on an open work permit.
