Immigration has increased the population of a Canadian province
The number of residents is now over a million.
In December, the population of Nova Scotia reached a record 1 million people. This was largely due to immigration. Growth has been particularly strong since July 2021, after Canada eased restrictions on entry.
"More people make us stronger in every way," said Provincial Premier Tim Houston. — With growth, we're getting more taxes, new businesses and jobs, a more diverse culture, and better infrastructure.
Nova Scotia now has an immigrant retention rate of 71%. This is the highest rate among the Atlantic provinces of Canada. Nova Scotia is most interested in attracting workers and entrepreneurs who will contribute to economic development.
By 2060, the province aims to double its population to 2 million. To do this, the local government plans to attract 25,000 immigrants each year. They will come from abroad as well as from other parts of Canada.
There are several ways to immigrate to Nova Scotia. You can settle in the province if you get permanent residence through one of three federal immigration programs that work through the Express Entry system.
In addition, Nova Scotia has a provincial program. People can immigrate through it:
- candidates registered in Express Entry;
- qualified specialists;
- employees of in-demand professions;
- candidates with experience in Nova Scotia;
- doctors;
- entrepreneurs;
- Nova Scotia graduates.
For most streams, you need to find an employer in the province first.
Nova Scotia also participates in the Atlantic Immigration Program, which allows those with a job offer to obtain permanent residency.
