Immigration to Alberta - Canada's Provincial Program (AAIP)
Alberta's provincial program offers permanent residency to experienced professionals, university graduates, and investors.
Alberta is a province in western Canada and one of the country's wealthiest regions. It's home to Calgary, one of Canada's main trade centers and a major transportation hub, and Edmonton, the provincial capital and a powerhouse in the region's oil and gas industry.
The cities of Edmonton and Calgary are popular destinations for immigrants in Alberta. While oil and gas extraction has long been the driving force of Alberta's economy, sectors like information technology, healthcare, and others are becoming increasingly important as the provincial government works to diversify the economy.
Candidates who don't score enough points for immigration to Canada through federal programs can try immigrating through one of the provincial programs. These programs typically have lower requirements and are available to a wider range of professions. Alberta has such a program in place.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) includes several streams.
Worker streams
- Alberta Express Entry Stream: for those with a profile in the Express Entry system;
- Alberta Opportunity Stream: for temporary workers in the province;
- Rural Renewal Stream: for candidates who have found work in a rural community with less than 100,000 people;
- Tourism and Hospitality Stream: for candidates who have worked in Alberta's tourism and hospitality sector for six months.
Entrepreneur streams
- Farm Stream: for entrepreneurs planning to buy or start a farm;
- Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: for Alberta university and college graduates planning to start a business in the province;
- Rural Entrepreneur Stream: for business people who want to buy or start a business in a rural community;
- Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: for qualified candidates who want to start an innovative business in the province.
By choosing one of Alberta's provincial program streams, you can obtain permanent residency in Canada and — after three years of permanent residence — Canadian citizenship.
