Important changes in immigration and other news

Significant events of the week from May 29 to June 4.

The big news last week was that Canada was crowned Ice Hockey World Champion. The last time the country won such a title was just two years ago. Canada now has 28 gold medals, a world record.

Political life in Canada is again turbulent, and the case of the investigation into Chinese interference in the election gains new momentum. Opposition parties voted to dismiss the former Governor General, who acted as an independent expert and said after the investigation that there was no interference. Officials accuse him of bias because the investigator is linked to the family of Prime Minister Trudeau, whose party is believed to have been helped by China to win the election. The opposition is demanding a public investigation.

Employment opportunities in Canada

Employees of major Canadian online company Shopify filed a class action lawsuit in court after the firm cut 20% of its staff and unilaterally reduced their layoff benefits. The lawsuit amounts to CAD 130 million, and the laid-off workers have a chance of getting paid.

Ontario removes barriers that prevent immigrants with engineering backgrounds from working in the province. Engineers are required to be licensed to start working. However, the license used to require the candidate to already have work experience in Canada. Now this requirement has been removed, and it will be much easier for foreign engineers to get the necessary documents to work in their profession.

On June 21, the province of New Brunswick will hold a job fair for healthcare professionals. Nurses, paramedics, physical therapists, and paramedics are needed. The event will take place in Paris, but is open to citizens of all countries.
