Immigration program popular with women has changed

Canada will begin accepting applications as early as January 1.

In early December, Canada made changes to the Caregivers Pilot Programs (Home Support Worker Pilot and Home Childcare Provider Pilot).

Categories

Previously, applicants applied for permanent residency and a work permit at the same time. After that, they received a work permit, and after 2 years of work, they received PR. Now there will be two separate categories.

Category A is for nannies and caregivers with no Canadian experience. If the application is approved, they will get an occupation-restricted open work permit. This will give them the opportunity to work in Canada and change employers if necessary. Within 3 years of receiving the work permit, a nanny or caregiver must have gained 2 years of experience to be eligible for permanent residency.

It is important to get a job offer in Canada before applying for Category A. The Home Support Worker and Home Childcare Provider Pilots do not involve working for a company, but for a family. Families, in turn, find it easier to hire workers from abroad.

For Category B, applications will be accepted from those candidates who already have 2 years of Canadian experience. They will be applying for permanent residency in Canada.

Requirements

One requirement for candidates has been added. Nannies and caregivers must have at least 1 year of post-secondary education. As before, the field of education and previous work experience will be considered, but there are no specific requirements for these factors.

In addition, applicants in both categories must meet language proficiency requirements. A language test that shows a language proficiency level of 5 or higher on the CLB scale is required.

Application cap

Acceptance of applications for the 2023 programs will open on January 1. For each of the pilots, Canada will accept 2,750 applications:

  • 1,650 Category A applications;
  • 1,100 Category B applications.
