Which Canadian provinces welcomed the most immigrants in 2021

About half of the newcomers settled in the same region.

One province accounted for a huge share of Canada's new permanent residents arriving in 2021. The real magnet for immigrants was Ontario, the province that is home to the largest city of Toronto and the capital city of Ottawa.

Statistics for the first 10 months of 2021 (January to October) show that 154,005 immigrants moved into Ontario out of 313,880 people accepted at the time. So 49% of newcomers moved to the province.

Ontario is followed by three other provinces, which have taken the lead by a wide margin. They are British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta. A total of 89% of all immigrants settled in these four provinces. The last places were taken by three territories of Canada: Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The full statistics by region is as follows:

  1. Ontario — 154,005 immigrants;
  2. British Columbia — 54,345 immigrants;
  3. Quebec — 39,550 immigrants;
  4. Alberta — 30,560 immigrants;
  5. Manitoba — 12,570 immigrants;
  6. Saskatchewan — 8,390 immigrants;
  7. Nova Scotia — 6,170 immigrants;

At the end of 2021, it was announced that Canada had met its ambitious goal of welcoming 401,000 new immigrants. For 2022, the plan is even bigger — 411,000 new arrivals. Ontario has no intention of giving up and is going to rebuild the province's economy with immigrants, including immigrant entrepreneurs, in the new year.

In addition, Ontario is considering recognizing foreign credentials and foreign work experience to make it easier for immigrants with provincially licensed professions to enter the workforce.
