There are more than 700,000 new job openings in Canada
That hasn't happened since 2015!
According to Statistics Canada, the country's job vacancy rate hit a record high in the second quarter of 2021. Among all jobs in Canada, 4.6% were vacant — the highest level since 2015.
There were a total of 731,900 vacancies nationally — 26% more than during the same period in 2019, i.e. before the pandemic. The strongest increases in offers were in Ontario and Quebec.
This situation is due to the opening of businesses after the pandemic, as well as a decline in the number of working residents. According to a study by Canadian job search portal Indeed, most unemployed Canadians are not looking for work.
The average hourly rate for vacant positions was $22.85 CAD, also higher than two years ago. Average hourly wages increased in all Canadian provinces except Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador. The largest increases are seen in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island.
Incidentally, almost all Canadian provinces increased the minimum wage in 2021.
There was a shortage of workers in Canada long before the pandemic, but during COVID-19 the situation worsened because of restrictions. The benefits now paid by the government, according to many economists, worsen the situation because people are not in a hurry to go to work.
The highest need for specialists is observed in the areas of health care and social support — about 108,800 vacancies. These workers have also seen a noticeable increase in salaries. On average, nurses are offered $32.50 CAD per hour.
Other popular sectors are hospitality (89,100 vacancies), retail (84,300 vacancies), manufacturing (65,900 vacancies) and construction (62,600 vacancies).

It is expected that the number of vacancies will only increase in the near future at the expense of those who left their jobs during the pandemic and are not going to get employed again. The statistics agency will release its third-quarter report in December.
Immigration is one way to fill labour needs. In 2021, Canada has set a goal of welcoming more than 400,000 new immigrants and is moving toward meeting it.
