Ontario changes assessment system for candidates with in-demand professions

Updated criteria for one of the provincial immigration program streams are presented.

Another stream of Ontario's immigration program will be selected through a new "Expression of Interest" applicant evaluation system. The system was launched in April of this year and assesses applicants on factors such as the province's job offer, field of work, salary offered, work experience in Canada, employer location, etc.

"Expression of interest" is already working for a stream of skilled professionals and graduates of Canadian universities. Now they are joined by a stream of specialists in high-demand professions.

Before applying for immigration under this stream, the applicant must have received an offer of employment in Ontario in one of the priority occupations and must have worked in the province for at least 9 months on a work visa. The list of jobs that are acceptable includes nurses, drivers, factory and equipment operators, butchers, farm labourers and other trades.

You can register with the Expression of Interest system at Ontario's official website and you will need to provide your information, which will then be used for the assessment. The province will invite the most likely candidates to apply for permanent residency.

Expression of Interest will soon begin for two more streams: Canadian graduates with a master's degree and doctoral graduates.
